Policy Document #9: The Expulsion of Members
Adopted May 26, 2011
- The initial expulsion process:
- Only the directors can determine whether or not a member is to be expelled from the society.
- If the directors determine that a member is to be expelled from the society, the Filing Secretary must submit to the member a written notice of expulsion and inform the member that they have two weeks to decide whether or not they would like to appeal the decision.
- If the member decides not to appeal, or if within two weeks of the date of the notice of expulsion the member has not yet notified the Filing Secretary of their decision on whether or not to appeal, the member is expelled from the society.
- Appealing an Expulsion:
- If within two weeks of the date of a notice of expulsion the member has notified the Filing Secretary that they wish to appeal the directors’ decision, the member and all their rights as a member are suspended until the member in question can meet with the Board of Directors to discuss the expulsion.
- The member in question may bring one other person to this meeting to witness the proceedings. At the meeting, the member in question must be given an opportunity to speak and argue against the expulsion. The directors must listen to the member, respect their views in good faith, and honestly answer any questions that the member may have. The directors must explain why they decided to expel the member, and the member must honestly answer any questions that the directors ask.
- Once this meeting is completed, the directors must decide whether or not to expel the member. The decision will be made in the same manner in which the directors make other decisions.
- The Filing Secretary must immediately notify (in writing) the member in question about their decision.
- If the directors decide that the member should be expelled, the member is expelled immediately. The Filing Secretary must record this in the membership roster.
- If the directors decide that the member should not be expelled, their appeal is considered successful, their suspension is immediately lifted and their membership status returns to good standing. The Filing Secretary must record this in the membership roster.
- If an appeal succeeds, the directors must not attempt to expel the same member again unless something new transpires warranting an expulsion.
